3 Ways to Get Sculpted Cheekbones
High cheekbones provide aesthetically pleasing contour and youthfulness to the face. With age, as facial fat deteriorates, cheeks can begin to appear flat and sunken. Others, however, were never born with defined cheeks to begin with. Sunken cheeks cause many to appear older than their true age. Flat cheeks can also cause an imbalance of facial harmony. If you have ever studied the faces of supermodels, you will probably notice a common denominator- they all posses sculpted, prominent cheekbones. Fortunately, cheeks can be restored and augmented through several different approaches.
1. Cheek Implants
Cheek implants are the most permanent and dramatic way to provide volume to the cheekbones. Not only do they augment the cheeks, the can smooth existing wrinkles over the cheeks by stretching the overlying skin tissue. Cheek implants create the most “lifted” effect.
Surgical cheek augmentation is accomplished by first placing incisions inside the mouth. As a result, scars are not visible. The silicone implants are then inserted and secured over the bone with one or two screws. Following the procedure, soreness and swelling may be present. This can be minimized with medication. Most patients can return to work within one week. Cheek implants are often performed in a conjunction with a facelift.
2. Injectable Fillers
If you are not ready to commit to the permanent and invasive nature of cheek implants, injectable fillers may be a better option. Hyaluronic Acid (HA)fillers like Perlane or Juvederm tend to yield the best results for cheeks. HA is a naturally occurring substance found in the human body which provides volume, allowing for a smoother, more youthful appearance. Such fillers provide instant volume to the area which lasts for up to 2 years. Better yet, this treatment takes about 30 minutes to complete and requires no recovery time. Typically, patients will need 2 to 3 syringes to treat this area. Perlane costs about $500 per syringe.
3. Fat Transfer
While more invasive than HA fillers, fat transfer is one of the most popular ways to address sunken cheeks. Less invasive than cheek implants, fat transfer to the cheeks involves liposuction of a donor area (typically the thighs or abdomen). Once the fat has been extracted from liposuction, it is filtered and injected by a syringe to the cheeks. Recovery time is minimal and results are unique to the individual -lasting up to five years. The cost of this procedure starts around $2000.
