Blepharoplasty is a surgery performed on the eyelids in which fat, excess skin and muscle are removed from the upper and lower eyelids. Luckily, the procedure can be performed in conjunction with brow and face lifts.

This outpatient procedure takes one to three hours and is completed under local anesthesia. Recovery lasts for approximately ten days and minor discomfort is normal. While healing, the eyelids may feel sore and tight. However, pain medication is administered to minimize discomfort.

As with any surgery, certain risks are involved. If you have history of glaucoma, dry eyes or a detached retina, you should first consult with an ophthalmologist. Other conditions that can increase the risk of the surgery include cardiovascular disease, hypothyroidism, Grave's disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Following eyelid surgery, temporary swelling at the corners of the eyes or blurred vision is possible. There is also a possibility that incisions may heal asymmetrically. Although extremely rare, some patients have difficulty closing their eyes completely. This can become permanent.
