Chin Augmentation with implant

By Dr. James White

In general, people are aware of areas of their face that are either excessive or deficient. This may occur in the form of a weak chin, flat cheek bones, round face, a narrow jawline or pointed chin. It is important to correctly analyze the magnitude of nasal profile, the size and shape of the cheek bones, or angularity of the jawline on the overall impact they exert on facial beauty. Just how important is the chin when it comes to an attractive face? Being at the bottom of the face, your chin basically serves as the anchor for your entire facial appearance. If it is well defined, it helps provide a strong, eye-catching look as it strikes a harmonious balance with your other features. Numerous studies have shown men with prominent chins are more successful in the business world. On the other hand, an undersized or receding chin can make your nose appear larger than it is, your jaw line seem weaker, and your face more tired looking. Essentially, a weak chin causes other features to appear out of scale.

Chin augmentation using surgical implants can alter the underlying structure of the face, providing better balance to the facial features. This operation is often, but not always, performed at the time of rhinoplasty to help balance the facial proportions. Chin augmentation may be achieved by surgical manipulation of the jaw bone (mandible) and/or augmentation. Chin implants can be placed using local anesthetics along with IV sedation in an office based surgical suite. Incisions are small and hidden; below the chin or on the inside of the mouth below the gun line.

By and large, various facial fillers have yielded excellent results in many patients seeking, for example, to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Nonetheless, while some facial fillers have a better performance record as volumizers than others, most require multiple injections over time because the injected material eventually resorbs into the body. Silicone implants, however, have the unique trait of providing permanent yet completely reversible results. A silicone chin implant helps restore a more aesthetic facial appearance, giving one a stronger jaw line and a more dynamic, youthful look. It not only increases the anteroposterior (front to back) dimension of the jaw-chin profile, it increases the frontal vertical dimension of the lower third of the face. This helps enable all features to look more proportional whether viewed in profile or face-to-face. Made of medical grade silicone, solid implants have the feel of soft tissue and underlying bone. They have tapered edges for a smooth implant-to-face and adapt readily to the existing facial structures.

The combination of facial features, proportion, and balance determines facial beauty. Whether a conscious or subconscious act, we are all sensitive to the shape and dimension of our own face and the faces of others. When the balance is pleasing, the eye and the mind are attracted to the faces of others. When they are out of proportion, we tend to consider them unattractive. We use our aesthetic sense to correctly perceive the three-dimensional interaction of all of one’s features. Well-defined, balanced facial features are considered a sign of beauty. Facial chin implants are one of the few procedures in cosmetic surgery that can best achieve these goals.
