Eyelid Lift Surgery: Popular for Patients Over 50

By Dr. James White

Deemed as one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in 2011 by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery , eyelid lift surgery, also known as a blepharoplasty, is effective in erasing years from a patient’s perceived age.

In fact, recent studies have further confirmed this claim. According to a recent study published in the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, patients looked an average of 9 years younger than their actual age after receiving eyelid lift surgery in conjunction with face lift surgery.

The Most Dominant Facial Feature

When many patients consult with our cosmetic surgeons, their first area of concern is their eyes. These patients are either unhappy with droopy upper eyelids or baggy lower lids and, unfortunately, one of the first places our face can show age is around the eyes- the windows to the soul. Skin and other tissues around the eyes start to loosen and sag in one’s mid-30′s with loose, lax skin, hoods and wrinkles. As years pass by, if left unaddressed , sagging eyelids can actually interfere with vision. Even more, if the patient can prove loss of vision by meeting insurance requirements, insurance will cover the cost of blepharoplasty surgery.

Eyelid Lift:What to Expect

Blepharoplasty/eyelid surgery is a procedure performed on the eyelids in which fat, excess skin and muscle are removed from the upper and lower eyelids. Although a Blepharoplasty (eyelid lift surgery) is highly effective at correcting droopy, hooded or puffy eyelids, an eyelid lift will not correct dark circles, crow’s feet or sagging eyebrows. Sagging eyebrows are addressed through a separate procedure known as a forehead/brow lift. An eyelid lift can be performed in conjunction with brow and face lifts.

This outpatient procedure takes one to three hours and is completed under local anesthesia. Recovery lasts for approximately ten days and minor discomfort is normal. While healing, the eyelids may feel sore and tight. However, pain medication is administered to minimize discomfort.
